PA Firefly Festival Announces Naturalist Guide Training To Meet Surging Eco-Tourism Demand In PA Wilds

To address the overwhelming global demand for firefly tourism, the
PA Firefly Festival is hosting a specialized Firefly Naturalist Guide Training on Saturday, June 20 at the Kellettville Firefly Farm in Forest County.

This six-hour intensive program is designed for outfitters, wildlife guides, environmental educators, or aspiring entrepreneurs ready to launch a firefly program or private guiding services in Pennsylvania.

Class size is limited to the first 10 to register.

Firefly tourism is a booming global phenomenon, with an estimated 1 million people seeking synchronized light shows and firefly programs annually.

Locally, the demand has reached a fever pitch; in 2025, over 3,000 people applied for just 120 spots in the Northwest Pennsylvania lottery, leaving thousands of eager tourists without a guide.

"We see this as a significant opportunity to support local entrepreneurs in building lucrative, sustainable businesses," said the PAFF board. "Our goal is to bridge the gap between the thousands of tourists waiting for an experience and the delicate ecosystem that requires expert stewardship."

Program Highlights--

-- Professional Training: Comprehensive instruction on conducting safe, sustainable, and educational firefly tours.

-- Business Support: PAFF will endorse, promote and refer clients to guides who complete the course.

-- Prime Location: Training takes place in the heart of the PA Wilds at the Kellettville Firefly Farm,  Tionesta, Forest County.

The cost of the training is $175 per person.

As interest in the rare Photinus carolinus (synchronous firefly) and other local species continues to grow, qualified guides will play a vital role in protecting the environment while providing a world-class experience for visitors.

Interested individuals can register and find more information on the official PA Firefly Festival website, complete the registration form or send questions to pafireflyfestival@gmail.com for more information.
