DEP Sets April 9 Hearing On Proposed Hazardous Sites Cleanup Response At The Mahoning Street Milton Radioactive Materials Site In Northumberland County

The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the March 14 PA Bulletin announcing an April 9 hearing on a proposed Hazardous Sites Cleanup Response at the Mahoning Street Milton Site in Turbot Township, Northumberland County.  (
PA Bulletin, page 1516)

The Mahoning Street Milton Site consists of a single, wood-frame, currently occupied residential home.

In the home there are various radioactive materials and objects that contain surface contamination from radioactive materials and a small amount of hazardous materials.

The radioactive materials found are consistent with known commercially available products such as smoke detectors, exit signs and luminescent dials.

While there is no unacceptable risk to the general public or any unacceptable short-term risk to the current occupant, the current occupant in the home is exposed to these items.

The objective of this Prompt-Interim Response is to identify, remove and dispose of the radioactive material, hazardous material, and contaminated items at a licensed disposal facility.

Previous waste originating from the home that had been identified and stored at the Lycoming County Landfill was further assessed for purposes of proper disposal.

The hearing will be held April 9 at the Turbot Township Municipal Building, 1190 Broadway Road in Milton at 2:00 p.m.

Any person wishing to present comments must register with Megan Lehman before 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7, by email at meglehman@pa.gov or by telephone at 570-327-3659.

Public comments will be accepted until June 12.

The Administrative Record on this site is available on the DEP Northcentral Regional Office Community Information webpage.
