DEP - Day 119: Contaminated Water Discharges Continue, Failure To Comply With Cleanup Order At Equitrans Water SVC [EQT] Richter Impoundment In Greene County

On October 14, 2026, the Department of Environmental Protection conducted a compliance evaluation of cleanup and control of contaminated water from a June 17, 2026 release at the Equitrans Water SVC (PA) LLC Richter Shale Gas Water Impoundment Reclamation in Aleppo Township, Greene County.

DEP found areas where field measures show contaminated water is still coming from multiple spring seeps and the pond outflow.  “Distressed vegetation” remains in several areas showing where there was contamination.

Equitrans is continuing to collect contaminated water at several locations around the impoundment on and off the permit area as well as the site of the original release.

Equitrans also sent DEP documentation on July 29, 2026, that it had notified downstream water users of a possible release.

Violations were continued, including an October 2 violation for failing to comply with a June 30, 2026 order to cease the release and take necessary steps to contain the release.

Three DEP inspection reports and photos are available to document continuing violations and conditions at the site: Inspection report #1, Inspection report #2, and Inspection report #3
