DEP Soliciting Energy Generation, Storage Projects For 2027 Round Of PJM Expedited Interconnection Program Reviews

The Department of Environmental Protection published
notice in the October 10 PA Bulletin announcing a Request for Information on prospective energy generation or storage projects that could be eligible for State sponsorship by the Commonwealth to PJM Interconnection as an Expedited Interconnection Track Project for the 2027 window.

Responses are due November 16.

Requirements for a project include—but are not limited to--

-- A minimum accredited unforced capacity (UCAP) value of 250 megawatts; 

-- Ability to achieve commercial operation within 3 years of EIT request submission (in this case, Quarter 1 2030 or later, depending on when the 2027 window opens); 

-- Ability to obtain 100% site control for the proposed facility, interconnection facility and interconnection switchyard by the date of EIT request submission; and

-- Both energy generation and storage projects are capable of meeting PJM's proposed requirements.

2026 Projects Announced

On October 8, the PJM Interconnection announced it has accepted the first three projects in a the Expedited Interconnection Track process-- two of the projects were from Pennsylvania--

-- ENGIE IR Holdings LLC Wayne 345 kV is a storage project to be sited in Crawford, Pennsylvania, in the PENELEC zone, with 860 MW of nameplate capacity.

-- Hunterstown 500 kV is an upgrade to an existing natural gas facility in Adams, Pennsylvania, in the Met-Ed zone, adding 455 MW of nameplate capacity.  Read more here.
