The PJM load forecast is estimated at about 94,573 MW against expected generation capacity availability of about 110,000 MW, about 60% of its generation capacity of about 182,000 MW.
PJM said about 72,000 MW of generation and some transmission facilities will not be available to meet demand due to maintenance and construction outages.
[In addition to these expected outages, there can also be unexpected outages like those that occurred during the October 13-14 Capacity Advisory.]
During the October 13-14 Capacity Advisory about 61,000 MW of electric generation was unavailable to respond to energy demands as a result of maintenance and unexpected outages.
About 15,000 MW of these outages were unexpected power plant outages.
PJM said it had 66% of its generation capacity available to meet the October 13-14 energy demands. Read more here.
In a statement of October 15, PJM said-- “Most of the new, rapidly growing energy demand is from data centers and other energy-intensive Large Load customers, and their consumption does not fluctuate significantly with the weather; it is a 12-month 24/7 phenomenon.
“The result is that periods the grid once relied on for maintenance and preparation can now become periods of significant system stress and reliability risk.”
PJM said-- the Oct. 19 Capacity Advisory follows a week of unseasonably warm fall conditions, during which PJM proactively implemented procedures to reliably serve increased electricity demand amid planned seasonal equipment outages required for maintenance and construction.
The advisory was issued to provide advance notice that capacity is tightening and additional actions may be required, such as recalling generation outages, rescheduling generation outages, calling generation out of market, recalling transmission outages to maximize generation deliverability, and/or notifying neighbors to anticipate less reliance on imports from PJM.
A Capacity Advisory is a new Emergency Procedure endorsed by PJM Members in June. It was created specifically for circumstances when projected grid operating conditions indicate an approaching capacity shortfall.
