The grants were announced by Robert Hughes, Executive Director Eastern PA Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation and Anne Daymut, Program Manager for the Western PA Coalition of for Abandoned Mine Reclamation
The Huber Breaker Preservation Society received a $2,100 grant for information kiosks designed and constructed within the Ashley Miner’s Memorial Park.
The Friends of the Nescopeck Watershed received a $2,900 grant for the purchase of a Swoffer Flow meter and rod to be able to take flow measurements in the Nescopeck Creek and Black Creek watersheds to be able to calculate metal loadings over time.
For 16 years, ARIPPA has partnered with the Eastern and Western Coalitions to donate and offer competitive awards to watershed groups, Conservation Districts, and reclamation and historical-related organizations that are working to reclaim abandoned mine lands, clean up polluted waterways, and to educate communities on the legacy of abandoned mines in their neighborhoods.
To date, ARIPPA has donated $108,000 to these efforts through the Coalitions.
The grants were awarded at ARIPPA’s annual conference in Harrisburg.
