DEP: Coterra Energy Aboveground Shale Gas Water Pipeline Failed Twice In The Same Section 23 Days Apart In Dimock Twp., Susquehanna County

On June 10, 2026, the Department of Environmental Protection inspected the aboveground Coterra Energy Busik Freshwater Pipeline in response to a notification of a release on June 9 discharging about 42,000 gallons of water in Dimock Township, Susquehanna County.

Coterra Energy believes the lay flat pipe overpressurized and ruptured at a coupling point discharging water into a stream and causing erosion and sedimentation along the path of the water flow.

Coterra replaced the lay flat line on June 9, but plans to replace it with about 2,000 feet of HDPE pipe along with installing an automated valve and controller to regulate pressure.

Coterra was also planning to repair the erosion damage and “rework” sediment deposited along the stream.

DEP issued violations related to the pipeline failing to meet construction, installation and maintenance standards.

A written response was requested by July 7.  DEP inspection report+photos.

Repeat Of May Rupture

DEP and Coterra both noted this was the same section of pipeline that burst on May 18, 2026 [originally reported as occurring on May 19] and sprayed an estimated 54,600 gallons of water around the location of the pipeline.

“The only reported damage to property [in the May incident] was the pressurized water moved the concrete barrier for the gates to access the Brooks well pad.”

“[Coterra] replaced the entire section of [pipeline] liner [after the May incident].”

“[Coterra] noted the area of the pipe where it had failed had prior damage to its liner where they repaired it previously.

“The waterline was not active when it failed and they will be conducting a root cause analysis to figure out what exactly happened.”

No violations were issued after the May incident.  DEP inspection report+photos.
