WeConservePA: 6 PA Land Trusts Preserve 693 Acres Of Forest, Watershed, Farm Land In Adams, Centre, Erie, Lebanon, Westmoreland Counties

WeConservePA highlighted recent efforts by six Pennsylvania land trusts to preserve over 693 acres in Adams, Centre, Erie, Lebanon, Westmoreland counties.

Land Conservancy of Adams County

The Land Conservancy of Adams County has announced the preservation by Daniel and Melissa Utz of 47.11 acres of property in southern Adams County in Mt. Joy Township.

With this preservation, about 13 wooded acres and 32 acres of cropland will remain unchanged, providing agricultural opportunities and scenic value for generations to come.  Read more here.

Centre County Farmland Trust

The 170 acre Bear Meadows Farm was recently preserved by the Centre County Farmland Trust.  

“Bear Meadows Farm is a beautiful, well-run farm located on the edge of the ‘growth boundary’ for the Centre Region,” said Dan Guss, president of the Centre County Farmland Trust. “The fields and forests on the farm are an important groundwater resource for the Spring Creek headwaters. CCFT is thrilled to have enabled Jeff Biddle in preserving this important resource for the benefit for future generations.”  Read more here.

Foundation for Sustainable Forests

Two-hundred and eighty-two acres of forested land in Erie County’s Washington Township have been conserved by the Foundation for Sustainable Forests.  

Robert Crawford Memorial Forest, as it will be called, contains forest surrounding the headwaters of Conneautee Creek and Little Conneautee Creek, part of the greater French Creek watershed.  Read more here.

Lebanon Valley Conservancy

The Lebanon Valley Conservancy recently announced the conservation of 136 acres in the Annville area of East Hanover Township, PA. The Lebanon County farm, owned by John and Megan Donmoyer, is actively farmed with crops and a dairy operation. The farm is near Fort Indiantown Gap, and within the Kittatinny Ridge Sentinel Landscape.  Read more here.

Westmoreland Land Trust

The Westmoreland Land Trust recently announced their successful acquisition of a 23-acre wooded property in Trafford bordering the Westmoreland Heritage Trail and Turtle Creek, permanently protecting a significant scenic and ecologically important natural corridor in the region.  Read more here.

Western PA Conservancy

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy announced the purchase of a conservation easement to permanently protect a 35-acre property in Ligonier Township, Westmoreland County.

The property contains a mix of farmland and mature forestland, including forested slopes that drain to Clark Hollow Run, a tributary to Loyalhanna Creek. 

It also contains the Clark Hollow Natural Heritage Area, which hosts special habitats such as those for the buffalo-nut (Pyrularia pubera), a shrub native to the Appalachian region and a state-designated rare species of concern.  Read more here.
