Susquehanna River Watershed Low-Flow Conditions Trigger Stop To Shale Gas Drilling Water Withdrawals At 11 Locations In Bradford, Susquehanna, Wyoming Counties

On April 2, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission
Hydrologic Conditions Monitor shows low-flow conditions have triggered a stop to shale gas drilling water withdrawals at 11 locations in Bradford (1), Susquehanna (8) and Wyoming (2) counties.

The streams impacted include East Branch Wyalusing Creek, Middle Branch Wyalusing Creek, North Branch Wyalusing Creek, Martins Creek, Meshoppen Creek and Tunkhannock Creek.

No Western PA Information

Similar information is not available for the Northwest and Southwest areas of the state in the Ohio River Watershed where there is shale gas drilling because there is no agency like SRBC to regulate water withdrawals.

DEP does require shale gas drillers to have water management plans that include low-flow restrictions, but that’s just one more thing DEP has to enforce.
