DEP: MarkWest Liberty Midstream Reports Losing 197,000 Gallons Of Pipeline Drilling Fluid Into Abandoned Mine Voids In 3 Incidents In Washington County; Total Losses Reach 734,600 Gallons

The week of January 5, MarkWest Liberty Midstream & Resources LLC reported horizontal drilling operations on the construction of the shale gas-related Chiarelli to Imperial pipeline in Mount Pleasant Township, Washington County resulted in three incidents losing a total of 197,000 gallons of drilling fluid into abandoned mine voids.

This brings the total number of reported incidents for this project to 13 with a total fluid loss of 734,600 gallons that began on October 27.

The incidents happened on--

-- January 5, 2026 when 54,000 gallons were lost:

-- January 6, 2026 when 102,000 gallons were lost; and

-- January 7, 2026 when 41,000 gallons were lost.

MarkWest will continue drilling as a "practical solution" to the loss of drilling fluids.  Read more here.

DEP said “violations may be forthcoming pending further investigation.”
