DEP Issued Lazy Oil Company Violations For Abandoning 12 More Conventional Oil & Gas Wells In Butler, Venango Counties

On December 30, 2025, the Department of Environmental Protection issued violations to the Lazy Oil Company for abandoning and not plugging 12 conventional oil and gas wells in Butler and Venango counties.

Violations were also issued for failure to submit annual production, waste generation and well integrity reports for at least the last 10 years.

None of the wells were inspected by DEP before and none of the wells could be located at the GPS coordinates listed on the oil and gas well registrations.

DEP said in its inspection reports attempts to contact the well owner were unsuccessful.

The wells include--

-- Butler County, Marion Twp.: Porter Auto 2, 3, 6, 8, 14, 27; Porter Bottom 2, 3; Porter Lower E68

-- Venango County, Irwin Twp.: Farren-Byers 4; Porter Auto 24; WM R. Barnes 1.

DEP requested a response from the owner by January 20.

DEP’s eFACTS database shows  Lazy Oil holds 200 permits, including 1 for an abandoned well.
