Coach Dick Vermeil
Legendary Eagles football coach Dick Vermeil knows victories-- but his greatest win for Chester County, Pennsylvania, may be restoring streams and protecting fresh water on his farm.
Partnering with the Stroud Center, he planted 800 trees to safeguard water, wildlife, and communities. His story invites other landowners to take part in this lasting legacy.
Soil - Key To Healing A Floodplain
When we think of restoring rivers and floodplains, we often picture planting trees, reshaping banks, and stopping erosion. But there’s a critical piece of the puzzle hidden beneath our feet — the soil. Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving ecosystem and clean surface water; yet it’s often an overlooked element in restoration work.
A new study is helping to change that.
Mud Snails
A Leaf Pack community creek monitoring event in Ridley Creek, Delaware County revealed one of the highest densities of invasive New Zealand mud snails ever observed in the region.
The discovery was made during a Leaf Pack Network program led by Stroud Center staff and volunteers.
Paul O’Callaghan Honored
Water scientist and documentary filmmaker Paul O’Callaghan received the 2025 Stroud Award for Freshwater Excellence on Thursday, September 25 at Stroud Water Research Center’s 23rd annual gala, The Water’s Edge.
O’Callaghan has been surrounded by water his entire life: he grew up in Ireland and continues to make the island nation his home. His dedication and love for the protection and preservation of water were apparent as he shared his trajectory from scientist to founder of BlueTech Research, and how, along the way, he became a filmmaker.
Stroud’s David Wise Honored
Stroud is proud to announce that David Wise, watershed restoration manager, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Fran Flanigan Environmental Leadership Award by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.
This prestigious award recognizes exceptional leadership and dedication to restoring cleaner rivers and streams across the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. It is named in honor of Fran Flanigan, the Alliance’s founding executive director, who helped set the foundation for collaborative environmental work.
