Western PA Conservancy, Berkshire Hathaway Energy Awards 20 Grants To Support Local Watershed Projects

The
Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and Berkshire Hathaway Energy recently awarded 20 grants, totaling $41,000, to 20 different local environmental organizations in 13 counties across Pennsylvania as part of their 2022 Watershed Mini Grant Program.

For years, financial support for the Watershed Mini Grant Program was provided through the generosity of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, which awarded a total of $433,475 to 130 organizations between 2005 to 2019.

The company that bought Dominion Energy’s interstate natural gas and storage business in 2021, BHE GT&S, is continuing the 17-year philanthropic legacy of supporting local watersheds through this grant program. 

The grant program aids the region’s watershed groups with awards that cover program expenses in three areas: water quality monitoring, watershed restoration, and organizational promotion and outreach.

This spring, grants were awarded to the following organizations--

-- Genesee Headwaters Watershed Association

-- Loyalhanna Watershed Association

-- Seneca Chapter of Trout Unlimited

-- Susquehanna Greenway Partnership

-- Tubmill Trout Club Unlimited

-- Turtle Creek Watershed Association

-- Upper Chartiers Creek Watershed Association

-- Westmoreland Historical Society

Don Houser, director for external affairs for BHE GT&S’ northeast region, says he is pleased to continue the philanthropic efforts that help improve local rivers and streams.

“It’s an absolute privilege to support these organizations as they complete meaningful conservation work in our communities. BHE GT&S has been inspired by the commitment showcased by the mini-grant recipients and congratulate this year’s organizations for their outstanding work and commitment to water quality,” he adds.

Jenifer Christman, vice president of watershed conservation for WPC, says this funding source is vital to local communities.

 “The Conservancy thanks the BHE GT&S for continuing this commitment to assist small local watershed organizations in our region with projects to directly benefit and improve water quality in their communities,” she says. “Many of these projects, which are making a difference, just wouldn’t happen if not for this funding.”

The Conservancy and BHE GT&S will begin accepting applications for the 2023 Watershed Mini Grant Program this fall.

The Conservancy has helped to establish 11 state parks, conserved more than 250,000 acres of natural lands and protected or restored more than 3,000 miles of rivers and streams, maintains 132 community gardens and other green spaces that are planted with the help of more than 11,000 volunteers and the support of more than 9,000 members.

Marcellus Shale Coalition Blog: Research Confirms Natural Gas Developed Responsibly, Safely

Objective research and scientific data shows natural gas is developed safely and responsibly, despite repeated claims made by those advancing outright or de facto bans on the production, transportation and use of Pennsylvania-produced natural gas. 

Among the strictest in the nation, Pennsylvania’s regulatory oversight of the unconventional shale industry has been cited as a model for other energy producing states

It’s a testament to the industry’s innovative nature, dedication to continuous improvement, and collaborative approach that we are producing and transporting the energy that powers modern life while adhering to world-class standards. 

In fact, natural gas operators have supported significant fee increases to fund additional oversight by the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), transparently disclosed chemical use prior to it becoming law, adhered to stricter setback requirements, and pioneered innovative water recycling and reuse practices, to name a few. 

And MSC member companies repeatedly carry a 98% environmental compliance rate, underscoring the industry-wide commitment to responsible operations. 

These commitments, coupled with natural gas’ low-emitting characteristics, are why Appalachia has among the lowest methane emission intensity of all major oil and natural gas basins in the country. 

“Natural gas is the sharpest tool that we have to solve climate change,” MSC President Dave Callahan said on WPHT Philadelphia’s Labor-Energy show. 

Indeed, Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry is leading the way in safer, more efficient energy production and transportation. 

Whether air or water, public health or land conservation, years of academic research and independent analyses confirm the safe and responsible nature of Pennsylvania’s natural gas production. 

Public Health

“Switching from coal to natural gas for power generation played a big role in lowering carbon emissions. Natural gas generation grew rapidly, driven by the shale gas revolution and low fuel prices.”

  In addition to carbon dioxide emission reductions, sulfur and nitrogen pollutants also declined and improved public health. The researchers estimate premature deaths fell from 38,000 in 2005 to 3,100 in 2020 (a 91% decrease).

At the same time natural gas began to produce 40% of all power generation in the United States, power sector emissions dropped by 39%.

Duquesne Light Expanding Public Electric Vehicle Charging Offerings In Allegheny, Beaver Counties

On May 31,
Duquesne Light Company announced a new lineup of electric vehicle (EV) charging and fleet electrification programs to help local organizations save time and money on installing EV charging and transitioning to an electric fleet. 

The programs are expected to significantly expand the number of public, workplace, multi-family and fleet charging stations in Allegheny and Beaver counties, making it even easier for area residents and commuters to transition to electric mobility.

“As part of our commitment to create a clean energy future for all in the Pittsburgh region, DLC is increasing opportunities for customers and communities to experience the many benefits of electric mobility while addressing one of our area’s largest sources of carbon emissions and air pollution — transportation,” said Brian Guzek, vice president of corporate strategy at DLC.

The company is encouraging commercial customers, including local businesses, organizations and governments, at eligible sites to take advantage of the new offerings: 

-- Community Charging Program: Helps expand the availability of EV charging at public, workplace and multi-family properties. DLC will partner with eligible customers to design, construct and cover the costs to install electric charging make-ready infrastructure, typically from the power grid up to the charging station. 

Participating customers will purchase and install the charging station units and may be eligible for related state funding, as well as a DLC rebate of up to 100% of the charging station cost if their project is located within an Environmental Justice Area and serves a disadvantaged community. 

-- Electric Fleet Advisory Service: DLC will analyze participating customers’ fleet data and work closely with them to understand their fleet requirements while providing them with a no-cost, custom roadmap to fleet electrification, including vehicle acquisition recommendations, cost of ownership comparisons, environmental impact analysis and more. ​ 

-- Fleet Charging Program: For eligible customers that are already electrifying or are planning to electrify their fleets, DLC will design, construct and cover the costs to install electric charging make-ready infrastructure, typically from the power grid up to the charging station. 

Participating customers will purchase and install the charging station units and may be eligible for related state funding and a DLC rebate of up to 50% of the charging station cost. 

Equitable Access to Electric Mobility

DLC is also expanding its work with Port Authority of Allegheny County to support the installation and cover the cost of DC fast-charging (DCFC) stations for six new all-electric transit buses, ensuring that public transit riders can also experience the benefits of electric mobility. 

In 2020, DLC installed the DCFC stations for Port Authority’s first two electric buses.

“As the cost of EVs continues to fall and options continue to expand, more people and companies are making the switch to electric,” said Sarah Olexsak, senior manager of transportation electrification at DLC. “We want to help our customers and the region safely prepare for an increase of EVs on the road and support a transition that equitably shares the health, economic and environmental benefits of electric mobility across the region and beyond.”

DLC’s efforts align with Pennsylvania's Electric Vehicle Roadmap, which aims to transform the state’s transportation system to provide significant benefits for the environment, economy and society.

PPL Joins Climate READi Initiative Focusing On Strengthening Grid Resilience Against Extreme Weather Events

On June 1,
PPL Corporation announced it has joined Climate READi, a three-year initiative launched by the Electric Power Research Institute to address energy system climate resilience and adaptation as extreme weather events continue to increase.

"As we strive to address climate change and achieve a net-zero future, we've made significant progress in hardening our systems and deploying smart grid technology to make our energy networks more resilient to severe weather that may become more frequent with climate change," said Gregory Dudkin, chief operating officer of PPL Corporation.

"Joining EPRI's Climate READi Initiative will help us build on these efforts in Pennsylvania, Kentucky and now Rhode Island by providing valuable insights into future climate impacts, rather than relying on historical data. This climate modeling will help inform our adaptation, hardening and resilience investments to deliver long-term reliability for our customers."

Across its Pennsylvania and Kentucky operating companies, PPL has invested more than $20 billion over the past decade on infrastructure improvements, much of that focused on incorporating new technology and hardening transmission and distribution systems. 

These improvements have reduced the number of outages our customers experience by an average of 35% over the past decade despite recent increases in storm activity and severity. 

As PPL expands its operations to Rhode Island with the recent acquisition of The Narragansett Electric Company, now Rhode Island Energy, the corporation is focused on replicating this success.

Climate READi will enable global energy companies, climate scientists, regulators and other stakeholders to proactively analyze and apply climate data, allowing for the planning, design and operation of resilient energy systems of the future. 

EPRI's collaborative model will convene the global thought leaders and scientific researchers necessary to build an informed and consistent approach. PPL is one of 13 anchor companies that have joined the initiative.
