DEP said the complainant did not notify the well owner of the problem.
DEP said the gas leak came from the wellhead where the casing appeared to be in poor condition.
“The gas flows from the wellhead to a shed several feet behind it, which per the operator is ventilated via eave vents on the eastern and western sides. The shed was locked at the time of the visit and the inside could not be inspected.”
“The complainant alleges that approximately seven years ago, the wellhead was destroyed in an explosion that occurred due to smudge-pot heating of the pipes to prevent freezing.
“They allege the wellhead was reconstructed in 2004 and after the fire."
“The Department could not locate a record of this explosion or either reconstruction.”
DEP issued a violation saying the gas leaks suggest well integrity issues and requested a response from the well owner by September 18.
