EPA Awards 25 Organizations Brownfields Job Training Grants, Including Nearly $500,000 To Auberle In Allegheny County

On February 6, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the award of
$12 million in Brownfields Job Training Grants to 25 grantees in communities across the United States.

This funding will help grantees recruit, train, and place workers for community revitalization and cleanup projects at Brownfield sites.

EPA's Brownfields Program helps grow local economies and support efforts to assess and clean up contaminated sites and return blighted properties to productive use.

In Pennsylvania, Auberle, an Allegheny County-based workforce development organization was awarded  $499,950 to train 117 students and place 100 in environmental jobs.   Read more here.

The training program includes 115 hours of instructional training, as detailed in the chart below. Students who complete the training will earn up to one state and seven federal certifications.

Auberle is targeting unemployed, underemployed, and at-risk individuals from the most impoverished communities affected by blight and environmental issues across Allegheny County.

Key partners include the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Allegheny County Economic Development, Allegheny County Conference on Community Development, Allegheny County Housing & Community Environment Program, Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority, Landforce Pittsburgh, Sustainable Pittsburgh, and Professional Training Associates, Inc.

“These grants reflect our dedication to improving quality of life for American families by achieving both the environmental stewardship and economic vitality that helps Power the Great American Comeback,” said EPA Assistant Administrator for Land and Emergency Management John Busterud. “These grants lift up communities by giving local people the tools they need to shape their own future. They help neighborhoods clean up and transform contaminated sites into places that support jobs, small businesses, and more. Together with our state and local partners, we are building lasting opportunity close to home.”
