DEP Sets Feb. 21 Meeting/Hearing On Proposed Expansion Of Pierson Rheems Quarry In Donegal Creek Watershed, Lancaster County

The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the January 20 PA Bulletin of a February 21 meeting/hearing on a revised Industrial Minerals (Noncoal) Mining Permit and an associated NPDES Water Quality Permit for the Pierson Rheems Quarry in West Donegal and Mt. Joy Townships, Lancaster County.  (

The site is located within the Donegal Creek Watershed.

The application proposes to increase the mining permit and NPDES permit size by 29.58 acres from 102.64 acres to 132.22 acres. 

The application will also revise the maps, update the erosion and sedimentation control plan and update the bond with the current rates. No increase to the NPDES discharge is proposed.

The meeting/ hearing will be held at the Rheems Fire Department located at 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 starting at 5:00 p.m. 

DEP representatives will be available at 5:00 p.m. to answer questions the public may have about the permit-ting process and regulatory requirements.

The formal hearing will be held from  6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The application is being reviewed by the DEP’s Pottsville District Mining Office located at 5 West Laurel Boulevard, Pottsville, PA, 17901. The phone number for the Pottsville office is 570-621-3118.
