“Drill cuttings that were previously blown into the pit were recently removed from the pit and spread across a portion of the well site that is located next to the drainage ditch for the pad.”
Field measures found the cuttings had elevated conductivity indicating contamination.
DEP regulations allow the disposal of contaminated drill cuttings onsite, however they must be dewatered and contained in a properly constructed pit and are not permitted to be discharged or spread onto the surface.
In addition, lead lines-- small pipes taking contaminated water from the well-- were not secured or stabilized and other erosion and sedimentation control violations were documented.
Multiple violations were issued and DEP requested a response by September 23.
