Susquehanna River Basin Commission Renews 2 Shale Gas Water Withdrawal Projects

On June 4, the
Susquehanna River Basin Commission held its quarterly business meeting and, among other actions, approved the renewal of two shale gas water withdrawal projects in Susquehanna and Wyoming counties. 

The shale gas withdrawals include--

-- Project Sponsor and Facility: Expand Operating, LLC [Chesapeake Energy] (Susquehanna River), Great Bend Township, Susquehanna County, PA. Application for renewal with modification of surface water withdrawal of up to 3.500 mgd (peak day) (Docket No. 20241214).

-- Project Sponsor and Facility: Expand Operating, LLC (Susquehanna River), Mehoopany Township, Wyoming County, PA. Application for renewal with modification of surface water withdrawal of up to 3.700 mgd (peak day) (Docket No. 20220602).

So far in 2025, SRBC issued a total of eight shale gas water withdrawal approvals.  Read more here.

 So far in 2025, SRBC issued or renewed 187 general water use permits for shale gas development. Read more here.
