The PA Resources Council is offering the public a series of workshops on Recycling, Composting and installing your own rain barrel in Allegheny County this summer and fall.
Backyard Composting
Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost by going to one of these workshops--
-- July 13: Cooper-Siegel Community Library, Fox Chapel, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
-- September 21: Construction Junction, Point Breeze, 10:30 a.m. to Noon; and
-- October 14: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
The course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a free Garden EARTH compost bin, which features an 82-gallon capacity ideal for both urban and suburban settings.
Cost of the workshop is $70 per person ($75 per couple) and includes one composting bin. Pre-registration is required.
Rain Barrel Installation
Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape. Learn about problems associated with stormwater runoff and techniques to reduce your contribution to watershed pollution at one of these workshops--
-- July 20: Construction Junction, Point Breeze, 10:30 a.m. to Noon; and
-- September 3: Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a free Garden RAIN 55-gallon easy-to-install rain barrel.
The cost of the workshop is $80 per person ($85 per couple) and includes one rain barrel. Pre-registration is required.
Recycling
It’s time to talk “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse!” at an August 17 Recycling Workshop at Construction Junction in Point Breeze from 10:30 a.m. to Noon.
The Workshop shares answers to common questions surrounding recycling in southwestern Pennsylvania such as: Lids on? Lids off? Rinse? Wash? Labels on? Labels off? Which plastics are acceptable? What about a window? Broken plastic toys? Electronics? Tires? Plastic bags? Polystyrene? Appliances? Textiles? What materials are accepted curbside? What about hard-to-recycle items and household hazardous waste? Unwanted pharmaceuticals? Organic debris?
Course fee includes 60 minutes of instruction plus a free 32-gallon blue recycling bin.
The cost of the workshop is $50 per person ($55 per couple) and includes one recycling bin. Pre-registration is required.
