PA Solar Center: Union Aid Society, EIS Solar Turn Sunshine Into Support For The Community With Solar Energy Installation In Allegheny County

On September 29, the
Union Aid Society announced it is switching to solar energy with help from the PA Solar Center’s GET Solar Program and developer EIS Solar.

The project will reduce energy costs and allow UAS to direct more resources to the Quaker Valley residents it serves.

The 49-kilowatt solar system will be installed on the roof of UAS’s senior apartments located at 511 Centennial Avenue in Sewickley. The solar panels are expected to offset the building’s common-area energy use.

EIS Solar estimates the system will save UAS $9,400 annually which amounts to $235,000 over 25 years. The $9,400 savings will be redirected to client needs.

The additional funding could nearly double food assistance, increase scholarship awards by 30%, or increase housing assistance by 20%.

“Union Aid Society has served our community for more than a century,” said Carla Nash, Executive Director. “As a nonprofit, we have to be thoughtful about every dollar we spend. The solar project allows us to turn energy savings into greater support for our clients. Every dollar we save on operating costs is an opportunity to help someone in our community.”

UAS explored the benefits of solar through the PA Solar Center’s GET Solar program, which provides organizations with expert guidance throughout the process. Following a competitive RFP, UAS selected EIS Solar to design and install the system.

“Since 2018, energy costs have increased an estimated 46%,” said Minette Beabes, Program Manager at the PA Solar Center. “We were pleased to help Union Aid Society assess their potential for solar, navigate the process, and identify a qualified solar developer. This project is a great example of how nonprofits can turn energy savings into greater support for the communities they serve.”

“Union Aid Society is making a smart investment in its future,” said Terry Tomei, Commercial Business Development Manager, EIS Solar. “These energy savings will help put more resources toward its mission.”

Founded in 1898, Union Aid Society provides a safety net for local residents through short-term financial assistance, affordable senior housing, scholarships and seasonal programs supporting families in need.

The organization serves residents throughout the 11 municipalities of the Quaker Valley School District.

The PA Solar Center is a nonprofit organization working to expand the benefits of solar to Pennsylvanians through technical assistance, education and advocacy. Its GET Solar program helps nonprofits, businesses, schools, faith communities, farms and communities evaluate and pursue solar projects.

Energy Independent Solutions is a Pittsburgh-based solar company serving residences, businesses, farms and municipal buildings throughout Western Pennsylvania and beyond. EIS Solar provides solar education, assessments, system design, installation and service.
