Susquehanna River Basin Commission Approved 74 Shale Gas Well Pad Water Use General Permits In December, January; 471 In 2025

The Susquehanna River Basin Commission published notice in the February 7 PA Bulletin the Executive Director gave his approval to or renewed 42 general water use permits in December and 32 general permits in January for individual shale gas well drilling pads in Bradford, Clearfield, Clinton, Lycoming, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Wyoming counties.

In 2025, SRBC issued or renewed 471 general water use permits for shale gas development.

So far in 2026, SRBC issued 31 general permits.

A separate water withdrawal approval is required by SRBC for actually withdrawing water from a specific water source for use by shale gas drilling operations.  Read more here.
