The Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute is pleased to announce dates for the 2019 Environmentally Sensitive Maintenance Course training sessions, offered through the Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies.
From March 26, through November 20, the CDGRS has 12 ESM Courses scheduled at locations throughout Pennsylvania.
These intense, two-day classroom sessions will focus on providing the knowledge and tools necessary for public road managers to maintain roads in a more cost-efficient and environmentally sensitive manner.
Attendees who complete the course become certified to oversee ESM road projects and will earn 1.3 Continuing Education Units and 13 Professional Development Hours (PDH) credits through the Penn State College of Engineering.
The course is free to municipal, county and state agencies involved with Pennsylvania’s Dirt and Gravel Road Program, as well as private contractors participating in Dirt and Gravel Low-Volume Road (DGLVR) projects.
Out-of-state attendees must pay a fee to attend.

The Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies plays a key role in environmental research and outreach at the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute.
The Center’s focus is on environmentally sensitive maintenance training and research to further improve outreach efforts. The training is specifically geared toward applying advanced techniques and materials to existing and reconstructed unpaved roadways.
The Center provides education, guidance, and technical assistance to minimize the impact of unpaved roads and trails on natural landscapes and hydrology.
