The PA Resources Council will present its 2017 Environmental Leadership awards to four organizations that have demonstrated their commitment to stewardship at its annual Awards Celebration on November 9th, at the Villanova Hotel and Conference Center in Philadelphia.
The four awardees are:
-- American Eagle Paper Mills – Leadership in Sustainable Business (Tyrone, Blair County). American Eagle Paper Mills is being honored for its high-efficiency energy and recycling system. The company, which creates chlorine-free products from recycled paper and fibers through its sustainable paper mill, upgraded its facility with a high-efficiency natural gas boiler and power distribution system.
Overall, American Eagle uses innovative de-inking and pulping processes to recycle multiple types of paper. The company produces hundreds of thousands of tons of recycled paper products each year, which reduced the need for logging and deforestation.
-- Fern Gookin, Revolution Recovery, LLC – Leadership in Recycling (Philadelphia). Fern Gookin is the Director of Sustainability for Revolution Recovery, LLC, a company that provides a wide range of recycling services for the construction, manufacturing, commercial, and residential markets throughout Greater Philadelphia.
Since joining the company in 2010, Fern has helped grow the company from one location in Philadelphia to additional facilities that handle 150,000 tons of recycling services per year.
Fern is also well versed in creating awareness of sustainability issues through art and design. Her work is seen through Recycled Artist in Residency (RAIR), a nonprofit program for global artists to apply and come to Revolution’s recycling center for various on-site projects.
-- Longwood Gardens – Leadership in Sustainable Design (Kennett Square, Chester County). Longwood Gardens has committed itself to ecological land management, with 65 percent of their 1,077 acres comprised of wetlands, agricultural lands, forest, meadows, and wildlife habitat.
Longwood Gardens oversees extensive recycling and composting operations. In just one example, 8,000 cubic yards of organic waste is processed in their 5-acre facility each year. In 2011, they opened their 10-acre solar field, generating 200-kilowatt hours of power annually.
For water conservation, Longwood has adopted advanced technologies and proven techniques to reduce water usage. They feature an onsite water management system where 100% of the water from restrooms, restaurants, showers, and tenant houses is treated and used for irrigation.
-- PNC Bank – Leadership in Green Building (Pittsburgh, Allegheny County). PNC Bank is being honored for its construction of more newly constructed LEED-certified green buildings than any other company in the world.
PNC is the first U.S. bank to apply green building standards to all newly constructed or renovated branch offices, with more than 250 buildings completed throughout the Mid-Atlantic. The Tower at PNC Plaza, a skyscraper in downtown Pittsburgh, is one of the greenest high-rises ever built, and even exceeds the current criteria for LEED Platinum certified building.
“PRC’s mission is to lead and promote individual and collective actions to preserve Pennsylvania’s environmental resources for each generation. Our 2016 awardees have advanced PRC’s mission through their innovative and creative programs and leadership,” said PRC Executive Director Bob Jondreau. “We applaud their efforts and look forward to honoring them on November 9th.”
The awards celebration will feature keynote speaker Cindy Adams Dunn, Secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
The event kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with a networking reception, raffles & silent auction, and wine & beer samplings, followed by the dinner program with acting Secretary Dunn’s remarks and the presentation of awards to PRC’s 2017 honorees.
“We anticipate a great night of connecting with our supporters, congratulating our honorees, and celebrating PRC’s accomplishments over the past year,” said Jondreau.
The reception will highlight PRC’s hard work to protect Pennsylvania’s environment, educate residents across the state, and engage stakeholders. Donor support of this event has an immediate impact and makes it possible for us to continue to offer services and expand our programs to conserve even more of Pennsylvania’s resources.
