PA CleanWays of Cumberland County, in partnership with the Cumberland County Planning Department, will host a tire collection for County residents on October 21 in Carlisle.
The local group is seeking to eliminate illegal dumping and littering of tires in the county by providing a convenient and affordable alternative.
The collection will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Cumberland County Service Center located at 310 Allen Road in Carlisle.
The last collection of this type for Cumberland County residents was in 2008 where over 3,500 tires were collected and recycled.
Tires that are improperly disposed leach toxic chemicals that contaminate soil and water. They also provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of West Nile Virus and Zika Virus.
Tire piles are also in danger of catching fire. Tire fires are known for being difficult to extinguish and create an abundance of smoke that carries toxic chemicals from the breakdown of synthetic rubber compounds, contributing to air pollution.
“This would be a great opportunity to “clean house” and remove unused tires from private properties. Your recycled tires will be reground and used as rubber mulch, play turf, landscaping borders, athletic turf, and rubber asphalt roads, among other uses. Tire recycling is a win for the homeowner, as well as the environment,” said Mike Onofrey, PA CleanWays of Cumberland County Coordinator.
“These collections provide a convenient, low cost alternative to the community. The tires that are collected at these events won’t end up over the hill where they would be difficult and costly to remove,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep PA Beautiful. “I really commend PA CleanWays of Cumberland County for recognizing a need and starting the change process.”
The collection is sponsored in part by the Department of Environmental Protection’s HHW/Small Business Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program.
The collection fees: Car/truck size on or off rim: $2/tire; Tractor trailer size: $7/tire; Large agricultural tires: $25/tire; and Tires from any commercial operation cannot be accepted.
Pre-registration and prepayment are NOT required, however, tire collections are costly and pre-registration is requested to help control/predict the costs. Prepayment can be made with a credit card or check by calling Stephanie Larson at 724-836-4121 x104 for more information.
