Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition Celebrates 30th Anniversary Oct. 4 At Jennings Environmental Center In Butler County

On October 4, the
Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition will celebrate 30 years of building partnerships and success with a day filled with special events at the Jennings Environmental Education Center in Butler County.

Featured events throughout the day--

-- 12:30 to 3:00 - Mine Mysteries: for kids of all ages to learn about coal formation, the life of a coal miner, coal tools, and treatment/water quality.

-- 1:00 to 3:00 - What’s In The Pond? use nets/tools to see and identify what's living in the treatment system and learn about the critters' importance.

-- 1:00 & 2:00 - Tour Of Jennings Mine Drainage Treatment System: learn about the history of Brydon Mine and discover how mine drainage is treated (45 min tour).

-- 12:30 - 3:00 - Self-Guided Tours Of Treatment System, the Foltz School House, Story Book Trail

In addition to the main celebration, the Coalition will also be holding these events--

-- September 20 - Hike from Barkley Road passive treatment system to Jennings, 10:00

-- October 24 - Hike meet at Leonard Rd Trailhead (139 Leonard Rd) to Kohlmeyer Rd (6 miles RT) 10:00

-- November 1 - Volunteer Event help SRWC remove invasives at one of our passive systems 9:00

-- Celebrate The Bloom Festival A Success At Jennings: Hundreds of visitors came by to check out the numerous local artisans, great music by talented musicians, and nature tours and activities held throughout Jennings. Vendors sold a variety of goods including home-made jams, wildlife photos, art, native plants, and more.

-- Passive Treatment Systems Assessment: The 8th statewide assessment of passive mine drainage systems included over 300 systems to help determine short-term and longer term maintenance needs.

-- Field Trip To Erico Bridge Treatment System: The Coalition led a field trip with Westminster College students to take field measurements and collect samples at the Erico Bridge mine drainage treatment system.
