The Chesapeake Bay Foundation-PA and its partners will hold a Connect Soils To Profits - No-till, Cover Crops, Soil Health, Grazing and Healthy Streams Workshop March 19 at the Wysox Fire Hall, 111 Lake Road in Towanda, Bradford County.
Featured speakers at the event include--
Gabe Brown is a nationally renowned speaker and pioneer in the soil health movement that is currently creating quite a buzz among producers. Gabe & his family operate a 5000 acre diversified operation near Bismarck, ND that includes crops, pasture, and beef cattle.
His operation focuses on regeneration of soils and farm resources using a systematic approach which includes no-till, diverse crop rotations, multi-species cover crops, and grazing. This “whole ranch management” has both increased the bottom line of the ranch and paid great dividends to the environment.
Dr. Bernard W. Sweeney is Director, President, and Senior Research Scientist at the Stroud Water Research Center, an independent research institution focused on stream and river ecology located in Avondale, Chester County.
He has an adjunct Professor appointment at the University of Pennsylvania and holds a B.S. in Biology from Delaware Valley College of Science and Agriculture, PA, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania.
He received the 2003 “National Award of Excellence in Conservation” from the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service for his research and work on the restoration of streams and their riparian corridors.
In 2006, he received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. He also serves on the board of directors for the Georgia Farm Foundation (currently President) and as an advisor on the Brandywine Conservancy’s Environmental Committee.
The workshop will include both presentations, plenty of time for questions and an informal pasture walk on a farm close by.
In addition to CBF-PA, hosting the event are the Bradford County Conservation District, U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Environmental Protection, Capital Region RC&D, National Center for Appropriate Technology with support by the Richard King Mellon Foundation.
