To mark 25 years in solar, Belmont Solar has also published its official lookback, "Solar Evolution: How Solar Technology Has Changed Since 2001," comparing solar technology in the early 2000s with today and sharing additional reflections from owner Ben Zook's experience in the industry.
NABCEP Certified Master Electrician Ben Zook began working with solar in 2001, when solar energy looked considerably different from the systems homeowners and businesses use today.
Early installations required more customization and, as Zook remembers it, each new system could feel like its own "science experiment."
Today, manufactured components and advancements in solar technology have made installations more streamlined and have opened the door to increasingly sophisticated systems that combine solar panels with battery storage, EV charging, heat pumps, and other technologies.
“The biggest changes we’ve seen in the industry are that the installations are quicker, there are fewer custom jobs, and we can build a system with less clutter in the mechanical room or power conversion area,” said Zook. “Combined with practically a million little ways that we have learned how to do things better than ever before.”
That willingness to learn has been an important part of Belmont Solar's growth. Zook and many of his employees began their careers with the company at a young age and were willing to learn alongside an industry that was still developing.
According to Zook, working in the industry has taught him that “individuals have the opportunity to help make our world a better place.”
Starting in the industry so young meant that Zook and his team got to “learn work, responsibilities, and a sense of purpose at a young age, all while helping their community be less polluting and more sustainable.”
Over the past 25 years, Zook has also watched the solar industry experience periods of rapid growth and uncertainty.
Through those changes, he says that trust, education, and remaining focused on the long-term benefits have remained important for both individual solar companies and the industry as a whole.
Belmont Solar recently had the opportunity to put that education into practice during the 2026 American Solar Energy Society National Solar Tour.
On October 3, Zook opened his Lancaster County net-zero home to visitors, giving members of the public an opportunity to see the power of solar in action.
This year, Zook saw more visitors than ever, with a few dozen visiting online and in person.
For Zook, opportunities like the National Solar Tour represent an important part of what comes next for solar.
“It means a lot when people see what solar can do, but there are still so many people who have no idea yet," said Zook. “Once people understand, Zook believes that "you're just not going to hold solar back from becoming even better."
As Belmont Solar looks toward the next 25 years, Zook remains optimistic about the industry's future while emphasizing many of the same principles that have carried the company this far: patience, persistence, continued learning, and a commitment to helping customers understand the technology they're investing in.
