John Barlett
Bartlett moved to Venango County from Erie County in 1970 to begin his journalism career. He joined the Erie Times-News in 1973 as a regional reporter and within a decade became the newspaper’s principal environmental reporter.
Bartlett retired in 2006 to pursue a career in conservation, first with Friends of Allegheny Wilderness and then the Foundation for Sustainable Forests as its first employee, retiring from there in 2016. He continues to serve as a board member.
He also served on the board of the French Creek Valley Conservancy.
James Myers
Myers was among the most media savvy and vocal conservationists of his era, repeatedly on the forefront of environmental issues locally, statewide and nationally.
In 1954, he chaired an Izaak Walton League committee developing water quality standards in the Great Lakes.
He fought for public access to local waterways and expansion of state game lands.
Myers took on the issue of Allegheny River dredging and of greater regulation of the oil and gas industry.
He is credited as a driving force behind the state’s Environmental Education Act.
He was widely recognized for his conservation advocacy, including nationally by Field and Stream magazine.
The Conservation Hall of Fame was created in 2011 by the Oil City chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America to honor local men and women who have made significant and lasting contributions to conservation and the environment.
