The projects are two battery storage projects and one natural gas generator upgrade with more than 2,100 MW in combined nameplate capacity that are slated to come online in mid-2019.
Two of the projects are located in Pennsylvania--
-- ENGIE IR Holdings LLC Wayne 345 kV is a storage project to be sited in Crawford, Pennsylvania, in the PENELEC zone, with 860 MW of nameplate capacity.
-- Hunterstown 500 kV is an upgrade to an existing natural gas facility in Adams, Pennsylvania, in the Met-Ed zone, adding 455 MW of nameplate capacity.
These projects were nominated by Pennsylvania under a request for proposals process initiated in March by the Department of Environmental Protection. Read more here.
The third project is also a battery storage project by ENGIE IR Holdings LLC - Galion 345 kV is a storage project in Morrow, Ohio, in the ATSI zone, with 800 MW of nameplate capacity.
In addition to getting generation online quickly, the EIT enables individual states to accelerate select projects based on their resource adequacy needs.
Through the EIT, PJM will approve up to 10 interconnection requests per calendar year in 2026 and 2027 for large new or uprated capacity resources.
To qualify, these resources must have, among other requirements, a commitment from a relevant state authority to help expedite site permitting – one of the hurdles many projects face after receiving PJM’s permission to connect with the grid.
A project must also offer at least 250 MW of unforced capacity, the amount credited for reliability purposes.
PJM expects the projects to execute a Generation Interconnection Agreement within 10 months of submission. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis until the limit is reached for that calendar year. The EIT process will sunset at the end of 2027.

The PJM Interconnection coordinates the wholesale electricity grid and markets for all or parts of 13 states—Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia—plus the District of Columbia.
