DEP just posted an inspection report dated December 1 on the incident.
CNX reported the incident to DEP at 9:41 p.m., however, the incident actually began at 11:23 a.m. with a pressure failure-- over 10 hours earlier.
Incidents like this are required to be reported to DEP immediately.
CNX said they experienced a pressure failure in the WFN12HHSM well and shut the well down and plugs were set in the production casing and two annuli.
As of December 1, CNX was waiting for the results of a well log and other information about the well involved in the incident.
The company reported they finished fracking the other two wells-- WFN12GHSM and WFN13JHSM.
DEP said, as of December 1, CNX had not submitted an initial Fracture Communication Incident Report within three days of the incident, as required by DEP under its Area of Review Policy.
DEP requested a copy of the report.
DEP also said, as of December 1, CNX did not submit a copy of its notification of the incident to an underground coal mine operator in the area as required by DEP under its Pressure Barrier Policy.
DEP requested a copy of the notification.
DEP has so far issued one violation to CNX for failing to notify the agency of the incident immediately.
In its December 1 inspection report, DEP requested a written response to the violation and a schedule for bringing the site into compliance from CNX by December 18.
In addition to the report and notification requested, DEP also asked for a copy of the site specific Pollution Prevention Contingency Plan that includes notification requirements of potentially affected coal mine operators.
WFN12 Shale Gas Well Pad
This pad has five producing shale gas wells and four new shale gas wells in the process of being fracked.
Top hole drilling of the four new wells began in October of 2023 and horizontal drilling starting in January 2025, according to the CNX website.
The pad is also part of the CNX “Radical Transparency” initiative that provides information from air quality monitoring and chemical additives used in fracking wells at the pad.
