The Township posted a press announcement on its website November 1 saying Energy Transfer detected an "anomaly" and it is now working to repair the pipeline.
The Township said safety staff from the Public Utility Commission have been on site and the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration was notified.
Repair work on the pipeline is expected to be completed November 8, according to the Township.
Township Supervisor Brian Dunn and Township Manager Pam Gural-Bear visited the site and met with Energy Transfer's Integrity Team.
The Daily Local News reported on November 2-- "Dunn said, during a Thursday phone interview, that he was alarmed after he was told by Energy Transfer representatives that the pipeline was active. Volatile ethane is running through the pipe, while sandblasting is ongoing, but Dunn was told that it was safe.
The News also quoted Ginny Marcille-Kerslake, a resident of West Whiteland Township and Eastern Pennsylvania organizer for Food and Water Watch as saying, "Residents are grateful that the township conducted a site visit to determine what repairs are being done on the Mariner East 2X pipeline.
“Presuming the dent was caused during construction, it’s concerning that it was missed by Energy Transfer in previous inspections — a dent could lead to pipeline failure and a catastrophic event.
“It’s also concerning that the pipeline continued to transport ethane under high pressure throughout the repair, including sandblasting and excavation with heavy equipment. Chester County residents continue to be put at risk for this out-of-state corporation to profit from the export of fracked natural gas liquids.”
