Allegheny Conservation District To Hold High School Envirothon Competition April 26

The Allegheny County Conservation District will hold High School Envirothon competition on April 26 at Boyce Park.
Envirothon is a rigorous academic competition for high school students that requires months of study and teamwork. Teams test their knowledge on five subject areas: Soils/Land Use, Wildlife, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, and an evolving Current Issue.
This year’s current issue is “Agriculture and the Environment: Knowledge and Technology to Feed the World.”
Envirothon also provides exposure to environmental career pathways through partnerships with the Fish and Boat Commission, Game Commission, Department of Environmental Protection and the Allegheny County Parks Department.
“As time in the natural world is increasingly spent in the digital world, Envirothon is more critical than ever in providing opportunities for devoted study of the environment,” said Rebecca Zeyzus, ACCD’s Envirothon Coordinator. “The Allegheny County Envirothon would not be possible without the contributions of our sponsors. Donations will power this memorable experience for our 80 outstanding students.”
This year’s sponsors include ACA Engineering, Alcosan, Allegheny County Airport Authority, Allegheny County Parks Department, The Broujos Family, CEC Inc., Columbia Gas, Commonwealth Press, Eddy Homes Inc., Eisler Landscapes, FMG Inc., Gateway Engineering, Golden Triangle Construction, JASE Construction, Laurel Communities, MKB Company, Pittsburgh Patagonia, PA Envirothon and WM Miller’s Sons, Inc.
The winning team will compete in the Pennsylvania State Envirothon Competition at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on May 21 and 22.

The winner of the statewide Envirothon competition will move on to the international Envirothon competition in July at the North Carolina State University Raleigh campus.
Pennsylvania teams have won the now international Envirothon competition in 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2017.  (No pressure here.)
And, actually, they should because conservation districts in Pennsylvania were the first to develop the Envirothon environmental knowledge competition program for high school students.
