The Department of Environmental Protection announced Friday it has approved IESI Bethlehem Landfill’s permit application to expand its facility in Lower Saucon Township, Northampton County.
The project, known as the Southeastern Realignment Expansion, will expand the municipal waste landfill by 6-acres.
“DEP gave careful consideration to the comments received from residents and Lower Saucon Township officials regarding the expansion,” said DEP Northeast Regional Director Mike Bedrin.
IESI Bethlehem filed the original expansion application in January of 2015. DEP held its first public meeting on June 22, 2015 to answer questions about the permit application and then held a public hearing on April 13, 2016 at Saucon Valley High School to take public testimony.
The review of the application included a review of the environmental assessment (EA), which determined the benefits of the expansion outweighed the harms. DEP approved the EA in April 2017. A second public meeting was held during the technical review on May 23, 2017.
A copy of IESI’s permit can be viewed at DEP’s Northeast Regional Office located at 2 Public Square, Wilkes-Barre, 18701 or the DEP’s Bethlehem District Office located at 4530 Bath Pike, Bethlehem 18017.
Those wishing to make an appointment to view the documents can do so between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. by calling the Northeast Regional Office at 570-826-2511 or the Bethlehem District Office at 610-861-2070.
