January 9 PA Environment Digest Now Available

The January 9 PA Environment Digest is now available.  Here are just a few of the headlines--

The health of the Chesapeake Bay improved two points-- six percent-- this year to 34, equivalent to a C-, according to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s bi-annual 2016 State of the Bay Report. Continued implementation of the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint and below average rainfall resulted in improvements in nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, dissolved oxygen levels, and water clarity.

A sculpture paying tribute to the history of environmental stewardship by dairy farmers, and crafted from more than 1,000 pounds of butter, was unveiled Thursday at the 101st Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

January 13 is the deadline for applying to the Department of Environmental Protection for the next round of Growing Greener Plus Grants for watershed restoration, mine reclamation set aside and EPA Section 319 water quality restoration projects.  (formal notice)

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is beginning a new series of webinars offering training and technical assistance on its grants programs and other conservation-related topics.

This year’s Western PA Environmental Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to R. John Dawes, Executive Director of the Foundation for Pennsylvania’s Watersheds; and John W. Schombert, former Executive Director of 3 Rivers Wet Weather.

The DEP Citizens Advisory Council is scheduled to meet on January 17 to hear an overview of information technology upgrades made by DEP in the areas of mobile inspections, eGrants and ePermitting.

A year-end workload report for 2016 by the Department of Environmental Protection shows conventional oil and gas drilling sites have 5 times the number of violations as Marcellus Shale drilling operations and 3.5 times the number of enforcement actions.

The Department of Environmental Protection Wednesday announced it has begun revising eligibility standards for expedited review of Erosion and Sediment permit applications related to oil and gas drilling because a program audit found 60 percent of the applications submitted to the program were incomplete or had technical deficiencies.
