Fall Salt Snapshot
More than 700 volunteers stepped into creeks, neighborhoods, and forested valleys for the Fall Salt Snapshot in October to help build a clearer picture of how much salt remains in our waterways long after winter has passed.
The initiative was powered by community scientists working with dozens of partner organizations throughout the mid-Atlantic-- across Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and beyond.
The surprising finding-- most stream sites sampled this fall exceeded at least one environmental chloride guideline — months after the last road salt was applied.

Award Winning Cut The Salt Campaign
Stroud Water Research Center is pleased to share that its Cut the Salt campaign is a winner in the 5th Annual Anthem Awards, which received more than 2,000 submissions from 42 countries worldwide.
Funded by a private donor, the Cut the Salt campaign stood out for raising awareness about the impact of road salt on freshwater ecosystems and inspiring communities to take small but powerful actions to protect clean water.
The work was based on chloride data gathered by more than 300 volunteers and about 30 organizations in Pennsylvania and Delaware this past January.
Harmful Algal Blooms
For the past four years, the Stroud Center has monitored the City of Wilmington's drinking water reservoir to help warn operators when conditions are ripe for an algal surge, helping them act before a bloom threatens the drinking water supply.
This long-term record has exposed a clear and troubling trend: algal blooms are increasing in both frequency and intensity.
Because of this evidence, harmful algal blooms (HABs) are now recognized by the city as one of the top concerns for Wilmington’s drinking water.
Without monitoring, this shift might have gone unnoticed; with it, the city has clarity and urgency.
