EPA To Host Jan. 13 Meeting On Status Of Palmerton Zinc Pile Superfund Site Cleanup In Palmerton, Carbon County

The US Environmental Protection Agency will host a
public meeting January 13 to update the Palmerton community on upcoming cleanup actions involving the Palmerton Zinc Pile Superfund site and the public water system.

EPA representatives and state partners will also be available to discuss next steps and address questions from the public.

The meeting will be held at the Aquashicola Volunteer Fire Company, 270 Little Gap Road in Palmerton from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

After the Palmerton Municipal Authority (PMA) detected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in its municipal water supply wells in mid-2024, EPA tested soil, groundwater, and surface water from the Palmerton Zinc Pile Superfund site in July 2025 to check for PFAS.

The results showed several PFAS compounds in most of the samples, including the areas revegetated as part of the site cleanup in the 1990s and early 2000s. Groundwater concentrations were similar to those detected in the PMA wells near the site.

EPA is working with Palmerton Borough, PMA, and Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to develop the best strategy to ensure Palmerton community members have long-term access to safe drinking water.
