PA Resources Council Holds Household Chemical Collection Event Aug. 1 In Cambria County

The
PA Resources Council will host a one-day household chemical collection event on August 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Concurrent Technologies Corporation in Johnstown to provide Pennsylvania residents with an opportunity to safely and cost effectively dispose of a wide variety of materials.
PRC’s collection is being held in conjunction with event host Concurrent Technologies Corporation and local event sponsor Cambria County Solid Waste Authority.

At this collection, PRC will incorporate new safety measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic including an advance registration system required by the Department of Environmental Protection.

During this event, individuals can deliver materials to Concurrent Technologies Corporation’s Environmental Technology Facility parking lot at 128 Industrial Park Road.

“This year PRC has introduced new procedures including advance registration and a $20 flat fee to reduce the number of interactions occurring between event participants and staff to promote safety during the current COVID-19 outbreak,” according to Sarah Alessio Shea, PRC Collection Events Manager.  “To streamline the process, we’re asking participants to bring exact change or checks payable to PRC and to stay in their vehicles while the professional contractor staff unloads the vehicles.  When preparing to attend this collection, participants must place all household chemical products in their car trunks or truck beds.”

A flat fee of $20 per vehicle will include disposal of aerosol cans, automotive fluids, chemistry sets, gasoline and kerosene, household cleaners, mercury thermometers, paint products, pesticides/garden chemicals, photo chemicals and pool chemicals.

Oversized loads will be subject to additional charges at the discretion of on-site staff.

Participants will also pay $12 per fire extinguisher and $15 per pound of liquid mercury.

“Introduction of the flat fee structure enables PRC to offer a nearly contactless event,” said Shea.  “All PRC staff members in attendance adhere to the most current safety protocols issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and local health authorities, which includes the wearing of face masks.”

Participants at the August 1 collection event must adhere to the following guidelines: 1) register online in advance; 2) place all items in car truck or truck bed; 3) wear a mask when speaking with on-site personnel; 4) remain in vehicle at all times; 5) bring exact change or check payable to PRC;  and 6) visit PRC’s website for updates before attending the event.

“The new safety procedures worked quite well during our first collection event of the season in June,” said Shea.  “All participants who register for a time slot are guaranteed the opportunity to dispose of their materials, and while there is no cost to register for an event, fees are associated with disposing of materials at the events.”

Participants must register in advance and confirm details before attending the August 1 event.
