DEP To Announce Powderly Mine Fire Funding Sept. 7 In Lackawanna County

Acting Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Patrick McDonnell will welcome media on a tour of the Powderly Mine Fire in Lackawanna County September 7 to announce federal funding for the project.
The project is the second of 14 abandoned mine reclamation projects across the state to receive money for the 2016 Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization Pilot Program Grant in Pennsylvania.
The project will remove dangerous highwalls, fill pits, and extinguish the 25-acre mine fire. The reclaimed land will be developed into a green space and have the potential for industrial use.
The total site is 108 acres of which 82 acres will be reclaimed.  Click Here to view a public meeting presentation DEP used in 2015 to describe the project.
The event will start at 11:00 a.m. at the Powderly Mine Fire site in Carbondale at the Church Street entrance.
Media inquiries should be directed to Colleen Connolly, DEP, 570-826-2035.
