Riparian buffers are among the most cost-effective tools for protecting water quality, but they require care in their early years to thrive.
During this session, you will learn the fundamentals of buffer maintenance and put your knowledge into action by assisting with upkeep in a previously planted buffer.
Roll up your sleeves and make a tangible impact on local stream health while gaining valuable skills in conservation stewardship.

What will you learn?
The basics of buffer maintenance, including:
-- How to assess the overall condition of a buffer
-- How to straighten tree shelters
-- How to remove weeds from inside shelters
-- How to replant trees that did not survive
-- How to identify other needs to ensure tree and shrub survival in a young riparian buffer
What should you bring?
-- Gloves, Water bottle, Shovel, Mallet or hammer (if possible) for driving supportive stakes into the ground next to the trees
The workshop will be held at the Penn State Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center 1446 Auction Road in Manheim from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.
