Family Day
Last month, Stroud Water Research Center’s Education Department led a family day at Marsh Creek State Park with Mighty Writers El Futuro, a nonprofit in Toughkenamon, Pennsylvania, that supports and uplifts Latino culture and families in southern Chester County through Mommy & Me programs, job readiness for teens, and a daily after-school writing academy.
About 80 people from the Mighty Writers and local migrant community enjoyed canoeing, fishing, picnicking, and more.
The event, made possible by the collaboration with our wonderful state park partners, fostered intercultural communication and community building.

Denglinger Farm Tour
The Chesapeake Bay Program, a regional partnership working to restore the Chesapeake Bay, celebrated its 40th anniversary last month with a tour of conservation projects in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Attendees made three stops, which included one of Stroud Water Research Center’s farm stewardship projects to restore local water quality and the Chesapeake Bay.
Denlinger Farm, which abuts an unnamed tributary to Mill Creek, is the site of the project. The owner of the 93-acre farm has planted a streamside forest and installed roof runoff controls, an alternative watering source, fencing to keep livestock out of the stream, and manure storage.
The local community’s response to this and similar watershed restoration work has been positive. Other landowners and farmers in the watershed have also chosen to join the effort. As a result, Lancaster County has included the tributary in its strategy to restore streams and get them removed from the state’s list of impaired waters.

Delaware Watershed Community Scientists
Volunteers are gathering data on the health of the Delaware River watershed, helping scientists and local watershed groups understand threats to water quality and where progress can be made.
Their backgrounds are varied — some are teachers, others are doctors — but they all have one ambitious goal in common: to ensure everyone has access to clean fresh water.
Stroud™ Water Research Center is helping these unsung heroes and the watershed organizations through which they work by providing technical support, capacity building, and a bit of can-do spirit.

2023 Freshwater Excellence Award Winner
Laura Turner Seydel is a global champion of Earth stewardship. By working with organizations that address urgent challenges affecting environmental health and sustainability — everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink — she inspires actions to protect our home and life-support system, planet Earth, for the future generations who will inherit it.
Turner Seydel is especially focused on preparing children to be the next generation of environmental stewards.
She is chair of the Captain Planet Foundation, which has funded hands-on projects in 90 countries and empowered millions of young people to be problem-solvers for the planet.
She is also a board member of the Children & Nature Network, which helps children experience and value the benefits of time spent in nature.
