DEP Hosts Sept. 27 Webinar On Applying For Environmental Education Grant Funding

On August 22, the Department of Environmental Protection announced it will host a live webinar September 27 to discuss the application process for its nearly $900,000 in available grant funding for environmental education projects from Noon to 1:30 p.m.

The webinar is free, but registration is required.

Environmental Education Grants are available to schools, colleges, nonprofit community and environmental organizations, county conservation districts, and businesses.

“The live webinar provides interested applicants with an opportunity to learn about the 2023 environmental education grants program, obtain application tips, and have their questions answered by DEP’s environmental education experts,” said Acting DEP Secretary Ramez Ziadeh.

Funding is provided for environmental education projects that address water, climate change and/or engage persons living and/or working within environmental justice areas. 

Previously funded projects have established successful community partnerships and reached audiences through a variety of activities ranging from tours and workshops to hands-on field experiences and action projects while addressing topics such as stream and air quality monitoring, wetlands restoration, watershed stewardship, energy conservation, and solar and other renewable resources.

Projects with a local focus may receive up to $5,000 and regional or statewide initiatives may receive up to $30,000 (Level I). Projects that engage students and teachers at three levels, local, state, and national, may be awarded up to $85,000 (Level II).

Level II projects must demonstrate that at least 30% of program participants live or work, or both, within an environmental justice area (as defined by the United States Census). 

The Environmental Education Grants program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993, which mandates setting aside 5% of the pollution fines and penalties DEP collects annually for environmental education in Pennsylvania. Since the program began, more than 2,100 projects, totaling over $12 million, have been awarded grant funds.

The deadline to apply for this round of grants is December 9.
