Join Penn State Greening the Lower Susquehanna, in partnership with the Lancaster Clean Water Partners, in harvesting dogwood and willow tree live stakes on March 25 in Colebrook, Lancaster County from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
After collection, the live stakes-- branches cut from healthy, fully grown trees-- will be planted directly into the stream bank, where they will grow into new trees. Those trees will keep the streambanks stable, provide shade to cool the water, and - most importantly-- keep the water clean.
Harvesting live stakes and planting them near waterways is an easy, fun way anyone to help restore and protect our local streams.
During this event, volunteers will:
-- Learn about live staking and how to identify appropriate trees
-- Cut branches from trees like dogwood and willow
-- Prepare and store stakes for future plantings
Don’t have experience with live stake harvesting? Don’t worry! They will start the day with a quick lesson on harvesting so that everyone feels confident taking part in this fun and important activity.
