Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful would like to congratulate its local affiliates in Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin and Perry counties on a successful 10th Annual Tire War which resulted in collecting nearly 4,000 tires earlier this month.
The participating affiliates included Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful, Keep Juniata County Beautiful, PA CleanWays of Mifflin County and Keep Perry County Beautiful.
This year’s Tire War winner is Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful with 1,480 tires collected, seizing the coveted ‘Gold Rim’ award from their friends and colleagues at Keep Perry County Beautiful.
“Our community has embraced this program. It not only provides a means of tire disposal, but has also served as a source of pride to our residents who choose to do the right thing. The Tire War has the support of local businesses, and residents, as well as the District Board,” said Andy Patterson, Huntingdon County Conservation District Manager and Keep Huntingdon County Beautiful volunteer.
Keep Perry County Beautiful came in second place, collecting 1,238 tires, PA CleanWays of Mifflin County collected 638 tires, and Keep Juniata County Beautiful earned the ‘Flat Tire’ award with 508 tires collected.
The collection events, sponsored in part by the Department of Environmental Protection’s HHW/Small Business Hazardous Waste Collection Program, have gathered and recycled nearly 30,000 tires from local County residents since 2006.
“These collections provide a convenient, low cost alternative to the community. The tires that are collected at these events won’t end up over the hill where they would be difficult and costly to remove,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. “I really commend our affiliates for providing this service and for generating excitement and camaraderie within our network.”
