On February 21 from 9 – 11 a.m. Darryl and Jackie Speicher of the Pocono Avian Research Center will lead a Bird walk on the grounds of ForEvergreen Nature Preserve in Analomink, Monroe County.
They expect to see a variety of birds as they wander the grounds of this former golf course. Cedar waxwings, eastern bluebirds, song sparrows and dark-eyed juncos are all good possibilities, as is the chance to experience the awe inspiring site of our Nation’s symbol, the bald eagle, soaring once again over Penn’s Woods.
In the 1770’s the Bald Eagle was named our National Symbol. By the time the US would celebrate our Bicentennial, the Bald Eagle had been pushed to the brink of extinction. When the Endangered Species Act was enacted in 1973, there were only two active bald eagle nests left in the State of Pennsylvania.
Today there are over 250 active nests in PA and at least two on the Brodhead Creek itself and several more throughout the Brodhead Watershed. What was an extremely rare site for the residents of the Monroe County just 20 years ago has become commonplace today.

Pre-registration is suggested in case bad winter weather forces a cancellation. A $10.00 per person hike donation ($5.00 per BWA/PHLT members and children under 12 free) will be collected at the start of the hike to benefit BWA and PHLT. Winter weather attire is suggested as the trails will not be plowed.
