PJM Interconnection Issues 4th Hot Weather Alert Of Season For June 18 In Mid-Atlantic, Southern Regions

On June 17, the
PJM Interconnection regional electric grid operator issued a Hot Weather Alert for June 18 for its Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions ahead of expected 90-degree weather.

Pennsylvania utilities included in the Alert area are: Met-Ed, Penelec, PECO Energy and PPL Electric.

Previous Hot Weather Alerts were issued for May 18 to 20, June 5-6 and June 11-12.

A Hot Weather Alert is a routine procedure PJM issues ahead of forecasted hot weather and/or high humidity to prepare transmission and generation personnel and facilities for expected increases in electricity demand, or load.

This procedure does not require any action from customers.

Temperatures are expected to reach and exceed 90 degrees, driving increased electricity demand.

Forecasted Peaks

As of 1 p.m. on June 17, PJM is expecting to serve a forecasted peak load of 129,750 MW on June 18.

This forecast is subject to change.

PJM’s planning for this summer includes unlikely but plausible scenarios of up to 169,100 MW of demand.  Read more here.

PJM’s all-time record summer peak load was recorded in 2006 at 165,563 MW.
