Modern agriculture relies on nitrogen fertilizer but increasingly faces its downsides, including carbon emissions, surface water pollution, and groundwater contamination.
The manufacturing of ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen has resulted in an overabundance of inorganic nitrogen in soils worldwide.
This presentation will explore why nitrogen frequently contaminates Pennsylvania’s surface and groundwater, the hazards it poses to the environment and human health, and the measures farmers and others can take to mitigate these risks.
