The theme of the Conference is Back To The Future? Energy’s Past And Its Lessons For Powering A Sustainable And Prosperous Tomorrow.
The Derrick reported, “The program is designed to facilitate interactions and spark new conversations between local leaders and conference attendees concerning future opportunities and lessons learned from the region’s 164-year and counting experience with-- and environmental recovery from-- the early oil and gas industry.”
Andrew J. Tabler, an Oil City native, author and a former US official who served on the National Security Council’s Middle East Affairs Directorate, said “There are challenges and real tension in the country and the world over the energy transition in front of us” (referring to the transition from fossil fuels to wind and energy).
“People who deal with fossil fuel and people who deal with climate are not the same and don’t meet. Unless we get those two groups to meet and talk things out, it is going to be very difficult to square the transition,” said Tabler.
The conference agenda includes presentations on community transition projects, panel discussion on oil and gas well production wastewater treatment and a tour of a brownfield site left behind by Wolf’s Head Oil in Reno [the Village whose water supply was contaminated by a conventional oil well wastewater spill which is still affecting the water supply].
The author Robert McNally will do a presentation based on his book Crude Volatility: The History And The Future Of Boom-Bust Oil Prices.
The second day will feature “Drake Dialogues” at the Drake Well Museum and Park where “global and local experts, practitioners and leaders will gather to discuss and debate the future of energy security.”
The events on October 12 are open to the public, but those on October 13 are by invitation only.
