Over 700 Students Participate In York County In-Person Envirothon Competition; Statewide Competition May 25

The
York County Envirothon returned to an in-person competition at Rudy Park for the first time since 2019!

Over 700 students from nearly every school district in the county came together from April 26 to May 10 to test their knowledge of aquatics, forestry, wildlife, and more.

This year, the York Home School Association “Tsugoose Canadensis” was the highest scoring team at the York County Senior High Envirothon.

The “Tsugoose Canadensis” will represent York County in the Pennsylvania Envirothon on May 25 at Camp Mount Luther in Mifflinburg, Union County, where they will compete against the best and brightest of thousands of high school students who participated in county Envirothon competitions across the state.

After months of extracurricular studying and countless pages of environmental literature, the students’ hard work finally paid off with high scores, good memories, and a strong sense of accomplishment.

The Envirothon is the nation’s largest environmental education competition. Nearly every county in Pennsylvania hosts an Envirothon competition each year.

York County is unique in the scale of its Envirothon. While most counties host only a senior high Envirothon competition, York County begins in the 3rd grade and hosts four separate competitions for 3rd-4th grade, 5th-6th grade, middle school, and senior high.

The York County Envirothon program introduces students to environmental education at a young age and prepares them for the senior high Envirothon and careers in conservation.

The intensity of the competition increases as students advance through the grade levels.

The highest scoring team at the senior high competition proceeds on to the Pennsylvania Envirothon with scholarship money on the line. The winner of the Pennsylvania Envirothon competes in the international NCF Envirothon.

At the county level, the Envirothon is coordinated by the York County Conservation District and sponsored by local businesses and organizations.

Sponsors of the 2022 York County Envirothon include Aquatic Resource Restoration Company, York Ag Products, Exelon Generation, First Capital Engineering, PA Association of Conservation Districts, Trumbull Corp., ELA Group, RES, York Excavating Co., Lee Fence and Outdoor, Covanta, Adams Electric Cooperative, York County Solid Waste Authority, Keystruct Construction, Horst Excavating, Wickersham Construction, Alpha Consulting, Vulcan Materials, Working Lands, C.S.
