The PA Anthracite Section of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration will meet March 12 at Carmelo's Roman Delight, 1240 Centre Turnpike, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County starting at 5:00 p.m.
The featured presentation will be on the Grace Iron Ore Mine located near Morgantown, Berks County and operated for 20 years shipping millions of tons of iron ore to feed Bethlehem Steel blast furnaces.
Construction began in 1951 and the sinking of two shafts began in 1952. In 1955, shaft A reached a final depth of 2,208 feet, and shaft B reached a final depth of 3,079 feet.
The Grace mine closed in 1977; however, the ore body was not exhausted. At the time of closure, a zone of ore 480 feet thick and rich in copper had been outlined by drilling to the northeast.
The presentation speakers are Ron Sloto, P.G., West Chester University and Walt Kaufman, P.E., Kaufman Engineering, Penn Anthracite SME.
