The 2020 City Nature Challenge will get under way on April 24-27 around the world where people of all ages use the iNaturalist app and photos you take to identify the plant and animal species in their neighborhoods and embrace the healing power of nature!
In Pennsylvania, the Greater Philadelphia and Pittsburgh regions will be participating.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, City Nature Challenge made some modifications to the City Nature Challenge to help keep our organizers and participants safe.
First, this year’s CNC is no longer a competition. Instead, we want to embrace the healing power of nature and encourage the collaborative aspect of the CNC.
This will allow people to safely document biodiversity in whatever way they can, even from the safety of their own homes if necessary.
The Challenge organizers urge all participants to carefully follow public health guidelines provided by your local governments, as they are changing in real-time. Individual safety and public health are our utmost priority.
Pennsylvania
The Greater Philadelphia region participating in the Challenge includes the city, Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery counties in Pennsylvania and several counties in New Jersey coordinated by the Philadelphia City Nature Challenge Organizing Committee.
The Committee members include the Academy of Natural Sciences, John Heinz Wildlife Refuge, Natural Lands, Philadelphia Botanical Club, PA Amphibian & Reptile Survey, PA Master Naturalists and the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership, Audubon Pennsylvania and many more. The Greater Pittsburgh region includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties.
